Fungal contaminations can be devastating to research and production in ISO environments. Often the contamination source is difficult to identify. A recent report by the non-profit Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) identifies at least one area of concern: Two hospitals reported aerosolized fungal contamination in cleanrooms believed to be caused by contaminated wholesaler totes. Testing confirmed the presence of Cladosporium, Aspergillus, and Penicillium species on the totes.
Incoming packaging should be inspected carefully and cleaned thoroughly. Note that standard 70% isopropyl alcohol may be insufficient. The ISMP suggests wiping items with a sporicidal agent to combat fungal contamination. Products such as ready-to-use Actril Cold Sterilant is a highly effective chemistry available from Sterile Science.
Of course, no process is perfect. Air sampling should be used to monitor critical facilities to ensure compliance. In the event that fungal contamination is detected, Sterile Science is available for immediate remediation. Sterile Science uses the Dry Fog System to aerosolize a solution of peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide. In only a few hours, better than six-log reduction in bacteria, fungus and mold can be achieved with zero residues.
